My sweet 4 1/2 year old Alana made the decision to cut her hair. It went all the way to her tooshie. So we decided to take before and after pictures, knowing that she wanted to donate it to Locks of Love. She told everyone she saw that she was giving her hair to a little boy or girl that had no hair.

So after a quick trip to the hair salon and a few tear later (by Mommy) Alana had a new do.

The next day Alana and I were picking up a few things from the store when she noticed a man with a bald head. She turned to me and said... "Mommy, I hope he gets my hair... he needs it" I laughed so hard I couldn't contain myself. Out of the mouths of babes.

Meet Miss Delilah! This fun two year old joined me in two session in one month. (So I thought I would make it one post.) This little Miss is a ball of fire that enjoys flowers of all kinds. And what girl wouldn't? This made things easy for me since the spring flowers are in full bloom.

Our first session was in March in celebration of Delilah's birthday and Easter. The second was all about blue bonnets and a quick visit to the studio. I really had a fun time getting to know her over the last month. Here are a few peeks just for you.

There are some people in the world that you're drawn too. In this case it's an entire family. Maggie, her parents and all her sisters have been such a great support for me over the years. I'm very fortunate to have them not only as my friends but as my surrogate family. They have been there for me when I needed a shoulder to cry on, a friend to talk to/vent to, someone to laugh with, grow with... and yes... even ROCK out with. Poor Maggie has had to listen to one of my many renditions of my all time favorite song "ROCK LOBSTER".

Several months ago I got an email from a new client looking for a photographer for her baby that was due in November. After a long wait to meet this little guy, he decided to make his arrival last week. Five days old on Monday, Baby Harrison came to the studio to light up my day. He's so cute he's already on our header. Check him out!

It took about an hour to get him to fall asleep.

The Mom and I are both in love with this shot. We got it the first try!

We spent a lot of time trying to post the sock monkey right. I think he was our most stubborn model yet. :-) Cute non the less.

Nothing like a kidney stone that gives you all the warning signs that it's coming, when of course I ignore it totally. This makes 6 stones I've passed for the year. Lucky me. Many of you know about my involvements with Ad Astra Rocket Company and the Space Center Lecture Series. Well, tonight is a wonderful lecture by Dr. Franklin Chang Díaz on Developing VASIMR® We would love to have you come and learn about the future in space travel. And if I remember right... a few of my images will be part of the presentation. :-) Got to love that!

We will host a book signing after the lecture for "Los Primeros Anos", $26. "Los Primeros Anos" is written in Spanish and is not normally available in the U.S. The lecture is FREE and open to the public, though seating can be limited.

We dream of going to the stars. In the last 50 years we have witnessed the development of the first ships that have transported humans beyond Earth. We have landed humans on the Moon and have now established a continuous human presence in low Earth orbit. Yet we still lack the technology required to safely venture far into the vastness of space. Although well suited for surface to orbit transportation, our current rockets are too inefficient for long journeys to the planets and ultimately the stars. For example, a one-way trip to Mars, would take about 10 months, and most of the ship’s mass would be taken up by fuel. Flights beyond Mars with current technology would be out of the question. Plasma rockets on the other hand, open up new and exciting possibilities for fast space transportation. Utilizing ionized gases accelerated by electric and magnetic fields, these devices expand the performance envelope of rocket propulsion far beyond the limits of the chemical rocket. The VASIMR® engine – short for Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket – is one such rocket. Its genesis dates back to the late 1970s when I was involved in the study of open-ended magnetic ducts, and their applications to fusion research. After 30 years of development, the VASIMR® has reached a high level of maturity and is now being prepared for its first test in space in late 2013 on board the International Space Station. Its success could imply a paradigm shift in space transportation and open the entire solar system for human exploration. Under development by the Ad Astra Rocket Company the VASIMR® VF-200 mission will serve as a pathfinder and help establish the US portion of the ISS as a national laboratory. In this presentation, I will describe the development of the technology in a historical context, from its roots at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to the NASA Johnson Space Center and ultimately to Ad Astra Rocket. I will also present the VASIMR® current status and our plans for its deployment and utilization in support of a developing commercial market of human and robotic space activities.

Franklin Chang Díaz (born in San José, Costa Rica on April 5, 1950 and a dual citizen of the United States and Costa Rica) is the founder and President of Ad Astra Rocket Company, an advanced rocket technology company in North America, with operations in Webster, Texas and Guanacaste, Costa Rica. In July of 2005 he concluded a successful 25 year career as a NASA astronaut, achieving a world record of seven space flights. During this time, he continued the development of the VASIMR, a new space propulsion system he invented and patented and which is now entering its commercial phase. Throughout his career, he has promoted science and space technology in Latin America, aware of the extraordinary potential that exists in the region. In 1990, he led a group of space scientists in search of a plan for regional integration and collaboration in space technology projects in Latin America that resulted in the organization of the First Space Conference of The Americas, sponsored by The United Nations and held in Costa Rica. Three similar conferences in Chile, Uruguay and Colombia followed this initiative. Two years later he helped to form The Chaga Space Project, a collaboration of 5 countries in the study of potential natural inhibitors to Chagas disease in the microgravity of space. The project resulted in the first multinational flown experiment from Latin America in protein crystallization with medical applications, which he conducted in two of his missions on the Space Shuttle. More recently, he has been active in his country of birth, Costa Rica, where he leads the implementation of The Strategy for the 21st Century, a master plan designed to transform Costa Rica into a fully developed country before 2050. He graduated in 1977 with a PhD in plasma physics from MIT. He is married to Dr. Peggy Marguerite Stafford of Alexandria, Louisiana and has four daughters. He enjoys music, flying and diving. His mother, brothers and sisters live in Costa Rica.

Dr. Franklin Chang Díaz will host a book signing of his newly released book "Los Primeros Anos" after the lecture. Books are not available in the U.S., though they can be purchased at the lecture for $26.

Every once in a while a get frantic phone call to get portraits done the same day or even the next day. Believe it or not, I LOVE these sessions. There's nothing like a good surprise. This session is one that falls into that category. Mom was going out of town this weekend and wanted some pictures to take home to her family for the holidays.

First may I say... my daughters are both SMITTEN by these boys. Alana (4) keeps asking when Cole is coming back to play with her. How cute is that?

Second... OK... They won me over too. Come on! They are sooooo CUTE!

Saturday I had the pleasure to photograph a GORGEOUS mom. Jeans run deep in this family because her 20 month old is just as cute.

When Erin called me to set up a session she told me that she wanted her 20 month old in a few of the shots with her. I thought it was funny that we both has 20 month olds. So I asked her what her daughters birthday was. She said March 3rd, the day after my youngest was born. So I asked her where she delivered her and the best part was that we delivered in the same hospital. We were possibly neighbors. Small world huh?

I'm in tears! I've never been so moved while editing a set a of pictures in my life. I'm so filled with pride and thankfulness. I walked among the 1,616 flags placed in honor of those who lost their lives to drunk drivers in Texas last year.

How to look thiner at your next session...

If you're like me... a mom who has gained a few pounds after having kids. You find yourself hiding behind the camera in hopes that photographic evidence will never be had. That's right. I seriously thought that if I didn't have any pictures taken of me, I could hide the fact that I had pack on a few "L.B.'S" after having children.

Then I began to think..." I may regret this down the road when my children are grown. " To never have a photo taken with my children really bugged me. There are seriously THOUSANDS of photos of my girls. But only a handful with me in them. Sad!

So with that in mind there are several ways to look great in photos with out having to hit the gym. This is a great video that includes techniques that I teach my clients who are a little more self cautious. It really works!

This has been some time in the making, but I've finally done it. I used to make jewelry as gifts for family and friends as early as junior high. Now I've started my own line of custom pendants and should soon have them for sale strait from the site. For now I'll be selling them by email or in person.

These pendents are great for gifts! I like to keep a few in stock for those birthdays that sneak up on me.You can customize them with a photo too! Just email me a photo that you would like embedded into the pendent and I can have it made in 24-48 hours. (samples to come) You can't beet that!

Two years ago I photographed this beautiful couples wedding...

A year later their newborn son...(I photographed him)

...Now two years later, a sweet one year old boy and his gorgeous parents grace my viewfinder.

I can't believe how time has flown! I lo♥e this family as if they were my own. Thank you for your friendship and letting me be a part of your family time line. Who knows? Maybe Little C could have a baby sister? I guess only time will tell.

One year ago this adorable newborn baby girl (pictures above as a newborn) was brought into my studio for her first photo shoot. My how she has grown in that time. It's been my pleasure to photograph her 0,3,6,9,and now 12month photos. Thank you so much Amy for letting me be a part of her life! I've said it in almost very post and I'll say it again... She is a DOLL!

Yesterday I had a blast with two ADORABLE sisters. Ages 4 and 8 and a load of cuteness! Some times I wish I was that age again. No worries (and getting to ditch the first part of the school day for a photo shoot...How cool is that? :). Just running and playing with the best playmate... my sister. I never had a sister, but if I did I would want to have a relationship just like these two. You can tell they really watch out for each other and love unconditionally. In my opinion... there's no better way to be.

What's going on here? I'm seeing nothing but boys around me! All my friends are bringing in these ADORABLE little guys to the studio. It's insane! I haven't had a baby girl in months. There are several more boys in the near future too. Is it in the water? Maybe I should partake?!

Ok... now on to the session. Yesterday was yet another boy. And a cute one at that! I quickly fell in love with all of his cute baby rolls and would have gladly played with him all day.

This session so very special because we used this beautiful cradle that was hand-made and passed down for several generations. Even his Mommy once slept in it! What a special family treasure to pass down.

We were lucky to also get this one. We tried so hard to get both of the GORGEOUS weimaraners to set still with no real luck.

This family is one of my regulars. So you can imagine, I've grown very fond of them. But for some reason, I'm taken away by these kids each time I see them. Saturday I finally figured it out. It's their eyes! They're the richest blue I've ever seen and they seem to pop right out of the picture. Beautiful! I'm sure this is not the last you will see of these guys either.

My daughter Alana loves flowers. So you can imagine the delight in her eyes when she stepped foot in her Grandmothers garden, only to find these beautiful flowers.

This morning I got a call at the ripe hour of 9am from my friend Olga. Her granddaughter is visiting from Colorado and she really wanted some fun shots of her little sweetie. She asked if I was available in an hour for a session. I had cleared my week so I could recover from having company over as well as my long trip. So lucky for her, my spirits were up (ie. My house was coming back together) and little Miss Anna Banana was over an hour later. Boy I'm so glad I worked today, because I would have missed out on this doll.

Smart move huh? She was so cute. When they came into the studio she reached her arms out to me.... Aaaaahhhhh... How stinking cute is that? So I held her for a few minutes and got to know her.

NOUN- A young hodad; a beginning surfer

What a day! Yesterday we took my 12 year old nephew surfing for the first time. I knew he would pick it up quick but I didn't think he would drop in on the first wave. He showed me for sure. By the 5th or 6th drop-in he decided to try a handstand...
He succeeded!
I'm so proud of him. He is truly a talented boy. It's a shame he lives in Utah and has no waves to surf.

Blake had a great time for sure. He's like the son I've always wanted! I'm going to miss having him around, but I have tons of picture to share of his week here. We're going to miss you "Little Shredder!"

Meet Laura and Richard. As you can see this fun couple are HUGE Cardinals fans... (that may be an understatement) They're FINALLY getting married this winter and wanted to have a couple of their engagement photos showing their love for the game. Isn't that cool? I'm really glad I brought my glove and ball along because they definitely made a great final touch to these shots.

I'm so excited! My adorable nephew Blake is coming to visit next week. He's such a hunk and a ladies man at that. He is by far Alana's favorite cousin and she cried when we left him in California. She thought he was coming with us.... Sorry Alana. But he'll be flying into the Lone Star State next week and we couldn't be happier. Or at least Alana can't.

Any who... In anticipation of Blake's arrival I thought I would post some shots I took of him on our vacation to Huntington Beach.

It's go good to be home. After a very long 2 1/2 week vacation to California, I'm back and ready to work. I kid you not, I was home only a hour before I opened up my computer and got back to work on some really adorable pictures.

Right before I left for my trip I did a quick session with my friend who had just had her first son. He is so sweet and was only 3 days old at the time. I couldn't believe how alert he was. Newborns are supposed to sleep aren't they? We were only able to get a few shots of him. So here are a few of my Favorites.

I think this is the most shots I've put in one post in a while. This was a blast. I took Brit down to my favorite secret hiding place on Monday. She is so smart, and plans to graduate high school next year as a junior! College is around the corner Mom and Dad. I'm sure what ever she does in life will be amazing.

Brit is very mature for her age and didn't seem to mind that we brought the whole brude along. Not to mention the slug like nature I have been in.. Last week I tore my LCL in my knee and have been hobbling around the studio trying to make due. Well, It was sure worth it. Just check out these awesome shots from Monday...

Thia weekend has been crazy here at Kat's Photography! So much going on and yet I haven't started packing for my 2 1/2 week long vacation to California. I have two more sessions to edit before I can begin to worry about what will fit in my luggage.

This morning I photographed a true "Ham Bone". Noah was a crack up. My favorite part is him saying "This is for the ladies!" in his deepest voice. This little ladies man is 4 and apparently has several girlfriends.

You may remember his little brother's 1 year old shoot back in March.

He was there today but was not in the mood to have his picture taken. Pore guy had tubes put in his ears early this week and is cutting his molers all at once. Maybe next time 'B'.
